winemakers comments:
The Eliza Vineyard is on the edge of a picturesque terrace situated directly above the Kawarau River in Bannockburn. This single vineyard wine is made from a small 3 tonne parcel of Pinot Noir clones 777 and 115 that is its own unique block within the Eliza Vineyard. The terrace is formed predominately on alluvial schist soils, with a band of pedogenic lime at around 1 meter below the surface. This band of soil created lime is very distinct and large clumps of small schist pebbles encased in the chalky white substance can be seen in the edge of the terrace directly below the vines. The soil gives a mineral edge to both the bouquet and the wines acid, providing a nice foil to the rich fruit and plush tannins that are hallmarks of wines from this sub- region.
wine notes:
Aromatic and complex bouquet with red cherry, blackcurrant, black pepper, and liquorice. Flavours of red berry fruits evolve on a bed of silken tannins to hints of black spice and dried herbs, while a line of calm assured acid runs through a lingering flavourful finish.
WINE PILOT 95 points.
"One of the most famous sub-regions in the Central Otago region is surely Bannockburn. This is a single vineyard Pinot, exclusively planted to clones 777 and 115. Pale crimson hue, it is immediately obvious that we have a Pinot offering some complexity. Spices, including a gentle whiff of pepper, dry herbs, aniseed, cherries, a hint of chinato and some slightly stemmy, undergrowth notes all find a place on the nose. This is a fine and elegant Pinot with deceptive intensity and gentle lingering tannins on a lengthy finish. The balance here is key to the success of this wine. Five to eight years." KG.
