Riesling

This new project from the granite soils in the northern end of the Macedon Ranges at 460m above sea level is an exciting addition to our activities. The vineyard was established in 1995 and the fruit has ostensibly been “lost” interstate until new Victorian owners took over in spring 2021. The new regime has quickly invested in the infrastructure and fine-tuned activities and several top producers are sourcing fruit from this excellent site. This is the rarest and most sought-after of Jeffery Grosset's world-class Clare Valley Rieslings. A strong spectrum of citrus flavours are the currency here: lemon, lime and a squirt of pulpy grapefruit zing with a faintly yeasty, almond-like character to finish. Campbell Mattinson - The Wine Front, AUG23 96 Points Well, seriously, the 2023 Grosset rieslings are wonderful. This has you at hello. It’s structured and a touch reserved but there’s decent flavour both at the outset and throughout and then the finish, well, it saves its best for last. This wine really does seal the deal. Chalk, lime, fennel, a grainy/skinsy aspect to the finish but this is a wine of great fruit purity, finesse and finish. It’s delicious. It impresses with its structure. Wine Advocate 91 points. 2022 was an excellent follow on from the excellent 2021 vintage. This 2022 Killerman's Run Riesling is spritely, inchoate and so tightly coiled at this point that the acidity and the phenolics are seamlessly intertwined. Really great value here—pristine Riesling. A potent and powerful riesling of deep concentration, strong lime-lemon citrus influence in both fresh fruit and floral components. Some blackcurrant faintly in there, Granny Smith apple too, with flickers of sweet spice, mint and dill herbal elements. It races across the palate, tightly wound, if not a little too dry and bony, restraining fruit flavour a tad, finishing a touch short. Jeni Port 96 points. A natural cool beauty, Watervale combines stunning aromatics – apple blossom, white flowers – with lingering aromas of Tahitian lime, lemon, grapefruit. Citrus and talc florals work hand in hand here. Soft, textural acidity offers a solid foundation for the brisk lemony brightness and lime cordial intensity of the fruit. Tight, coiled and pristinely focused with pure lemon, crunchy green apple, grapefruit and lemon fruit notes and hints of crushed stone, fennel, flint, orange blossom, lemongrass and crisp pear. There are some light mountain herb tones on the palate, which shows superb tension and a minerally velocity that is quite something, finishing riverstone-dry and thirst-slakingly refreshing. Sweet Wine of the Year. Score awarded by the Halliday tasting panel at the annual Awards judging. DB writes: A wonderful sweet riesling sporting 139g RS from Tasmania's Coal River Valley. The acidity is the key here. It tempers the sweetness and provides a minerally frame on which the unctuous fruit is tautly stretched. Green apple, lime, fresh and candied rinds, an array of wildflower notes, apple pie, crushed stone and toffee apple. Weighing in at 9.2% alcohol, this is what the Germans would refer to as a 'breakfast wine', a term that I love. The RS69 here denotes 69g RS in the wine, so think medium sweet. It's peachy with lemon drop, grapefruit zest, white flowers, crushed stone and a suggestion of spearmint and fennel further back. It's delicious.
